I still remember a story from an old book I read as a child concerning how the sea became salty, it was of course an old tale, but it was an interesting one, delight your child with one of these books.
The old legend has it that a witch was contacted by a young girl whom had a need for salt, but there was no salt to be had, she contacted the old witch who gave to her a grinder that when the handle was turned produced salt.
Well this was indeed a very good thing because during these times salt was not easily had by anyone, and the girl was able to sell the salt and made a tidy profit in the balance.
The old witch upon hearing about this, insisted that she be given her due by this time however the girl was indeed very rich and refused the woman her due.
The old witch cursed the salt machine and it began to turn by itself churning out salt by the wagon load, the girl was upset and had no idea at all what to do because now everyone had enough salt and she could sell no more salt at any price.
Even worse there was the problem of having too much of it, salt was everywhere.
She went to an over hanging cliff to the ocean and threw the salt machine into the ocean and that is why now even to this day the ocean is salty.
